I'm taking my 9 year old on his first Boundary Waters trip next Tuesday through Thursday. We're entering on Poplar and heading towards Caribou and want to stay at the same campsite for both nights. My son loves to fish so that's the main reason for the trip.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on what to bring for lures and places to fish. He probably doesn't care what we catch just so we're catching fish. We are willing to portage to some of the surrounding lakes to find fish. Any suggestions on ideal campsites would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
If it were me I would set him up with a 4 inch wacky worm under a slip bobber for smallies. Very effective and relatively snag free.
I would start looking around the first break 7-10 feet and move deeper from there.
If you’re up for a day trip I’ve had good luck on Meeds right in the bay off the portage from caribou. That was in late July, it’s possible they have moved out of there by now.
