I paddled the Mississippi river for about 3 hours this afternoon from the confluence of the Crow Wing river down to Champlin, MN. I've been itching all winter to get back in my solo canoe and cover some water. The weather was fair and sunny for my paddle today. Thousands of ducks and geese are staging on the river, awaiting more open water. I had ducks circling and cruising by me all afternoon. Bald eagles were plentiful as well, I even saw one swoop down and grab a fish out of the water.
All in all, my short trip was a very pleasant way to begin the paddling season.
Congratulations. Early season paddling does have its specialness. I enjoy checking out some interesting ice formations. All the trash from the winter is also available for viewing, for those interested. The geese, ducks etc. staging and eagles are more pleasant to watch. First paddle was 2/22 when the city asked for some water dump from the reservoir and the river opened up for a few days. Saw this fellow.
